Issue Brief Idea

Drinking ages
Should be reduced to 18
  • Explain origins of law
  • Explain flawed logic behind up keeping of law
  • Compare to other societies with higher and lower ages
    • Establish societal effect
    • Look at statistics dealing with alcohol related crimes
  • Conclusion

United States (Federal) - 21
  • Rationale
    • DUI’s are said to have significantly gone down from a higher drinking age
    • Belief that the problems surrounding underage and binge drinking will only get worse if lowered to 18
    • Drinking at lower ages causes worse academic performance
    • More early teens susceptible to alcoholism
    • If states were to lower their drinking age from 21, they would lose up to ten percent of their federal highway funding
    • The concept that a person becomes a full adult at age 21 dates back centuries in English common law; 21 was the age at which a person could, among other things, vote and become a knight (Based on old laws)
    • rises in alcohol-related traffic fatalities among 18-20 year-old drivers in areas where the drinking age had been lowered
    • Teenagers from the more restrictive state would drive into the one where they could buy booze, drink, and then drive home, which created a perfect storm for traffic fatalities
    • Mothers Against Drunk Driving began agitating for a uniform national drinking age of 21
    • Non-alcohol traffic fatalities have also declined relative to the number of miles driven over the same time period, which could be attributed to any number of causes, including increased seat belt usage, the widespread use of airbags, and other safety improvements to cars and roads
    • Only first world country to implement 21 year old age limit

United Kingdom (can drink at home legally above 6, 16 year olds can have less alcoholic beverages, 18 can buy hard liquor)
  • Rationale
    • Allows parents to inform their children as their children drink the beverages to allow them to see first hand what the effects of alcohol are.
    • More quality beverages that cost a lot more money to get than in America that cause people (especially younger less rich folks) to purchase a lot less of it
    • Less excessive drinking overall
    • Less excitement surrounding drinking for youth of Britain
    • Only 38% of 11 to 15 year olds had even tried alcohol (23% less than 11 years prior)
    • Problems surrounding underage drinking seem to sort themselves out
    • Higher cost most effective way to stop kids from drinking

Some parts of India (Age above 25)
  • Rationale
    • Fully developed brains less risk of actually damage to brain cells
    • A college student, addicted to alcohol can easily take up crime such as mugging. These small crimes are gateway crimes and may lead to much larger problems in the future.
    • Taking loans from friends, acquaintances etc. looks fairly straightforward. But it may lead to unsustainable amounts of money, leading to (1)
    • Thus for 25 year olds, it is highly probable that they can support their addiction on their own.
    • just reflects naïve puritanism and any sane person will realize how ridiculous it is to expect a bearded 22 year-old who pays his own bills to obey an archaic law like this
